JDC environmental Contractors Limited replace old and leaking septic tanks. Septic tanks are rapidly being replaced with the more ‘environmentally friendly’ sewage treatment plants (STP’s). Septic tanks do little to remove nitrogen (Ammoniacal-Nitrogen measured in mg/l) from the final discharge effluent which ends up in the environment. On January 1st 2020 all septic tanks discharging into surface waters (ditches, streams etc) were required to be replaced with STP’s, or have drainage fields installed.

Septic tanks, even the ones discharging to ground (drainage fields) will eventually be replaced with sewage treatment plants across the UK. Our inland waterways and coastal marine environments are becoming polluted with Nitrates and phosphates and correct sewage treatment can help to mitigate this problem.

Anyone buying a new home with an off-mains sewage system should have a foul drainage survey completed (JDC environmental Contractors Ltd undertake Foul Drainage Surveys for both Vendors & Buyers) before signing the contract and we advise that all properties with septic tanks should be up-graded with a sewage treatment plant, usually at the expense of the vendor.

The Environment Agency (EA) and local Authorities mostly require that sewage discharge is of a higher standard than a septic tank can produce.

 

The EA set consent levels for discharge depending on the sensitivity of the environment that is being discharged into, but for most domestic situations a sewage treatment plant can be installed under the General Binding Rules and therefore does not require a bespoke permit.
